Ellen N. Beattie Ph.D. is an educational leader, national presenter, and academic success innovator. Her areas of expertise include neuroscience-based teaching and learning, online faculty and student success, student retention, and educational leadership. Her research focuses on the relationship between neuroscience, cognitive studies, and positive psychology. She enjoys intermingling research and practical experience to provide educational leaders, administrators, and faculty evidence-based practices to employ immediately in their institutions.

Dr. Ellen N. Beattie is an educational leader, developer, and consultant specializing in positive academic leadership, online teaching and learning, and neuroscience. Her areas of expertise include neuroscience-based teaching and learning, online faculty and student success, student retention, and educational leadership. An innovative blend of neuroscience, cognitive studies, and positive psychology create a foundation for her work. She enjoys intermingling research and practical experience to provide educational leaders, administrators, and faculty evidence-based practices to employ immediately within their institutions.
Educational Leadership: Dr. Ellen Beattie's leadership spans public, private, and government agencies. She has served the Maryland Department of Labor as the Chief of Adult Instructional Services. In that role, she oversaw Maryland’s adult literacy educational system, including 25 local partners serving 30,000 learners in alignment with Title II of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).
Building educational systems that meet programmatic outcomes and student success have been the focus of her career. During her academic tenure, Dr. Beattie has held senior leadership positions, including Director of Academic Counseling and Student Retention, Director of Literacy, and Regional Director of Operations and Student Services for both public and private institutions of higher education. In 2020, Online Learning Consortium recognized Dr. Beattie’s commitment to diversity and inclusion with the Leadership in Equity and Inclusion in Online Learning award.
Teaching & Scholarship: Dr. Beattie currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Ph.D. in Education program at the University of Arizona Global Campus. She has over 15 years of experience teaching at the college level, including undergraduate teaching at Ashford University, Colorado Technical University, the Community College of Baltimore County, Purdue Global, University of Arizona Global Campus, and the University of Phoenix. She facilitates graduate and doctoral level coursework and mentors independent dissertation research at the University of Arizona Global Campus (formerly University of the Rockies).
Her research focuses on the relationship between applied neuroscience, andragogy, positive psychology, and mindfulness. Recent publications include content on positive academic leadership, the neuroscience of stress and resiliency, creativity as a 21st century workforce skill. Adult Literacy Education: The International Journal of Literacy, Language, and Numeracy highlights her fall 2021 article, The Power of the Positive: Enhancing Online Student Engagement for Adult Literacy Learners.
